Understand Pranayam, The life force within -

Understanding Pranayam: The life force within.

Pran is the universal life force and Aayam is the act of growing or lengthening. Pranayam is the ancient Indian practise of controlling your breath. Pranayam is one of the basic tenet of Yoga. Our breath has a powerful impact on our well-being. Pranayam teaches us to harness this power to better our mental, physical and spiritual wellness. This easy to begin practise, can have far-reaching benefits on our daily lives. And all it takes is a quiet space and our own breath.

The Benefits of Pranayam:
1. Better oxygenation leading to a greater sense of energy.
2. Pranayam is known to calm the nerves, reducing the impact of lifestyle diseases and the stresses of modern life.
3. The act of focussing on your breath can help you feel more centres, energetic and positive.

The 6 basics of Pranayam:
1. Bhasrika Pranayam: The act of breathing in, and breathing out forcefully by rapidly contracting your abdomen. This is a rapid breathing exercise.
2. Kapalbhati Pranayam: The is the act of breathing deeply, while focussing on the act of exhaling forcefully.
3. Anulom Vilom: This is the act of inhaling and exhaling through alternate nostrils.
4. Bahya Pranayam: This is the act of streatching your head back on inhale and touching your chin to your collarbone on exhale.
5. Brahmari Pranayam: This Pranayam, involves gently closing your eyes, nostrils and ears with your hands to create a humming reverberation with your breath.
6. Udgeeth Pranayam: This is the act of breathing in deeply and exhaling to the cosmic sound of ‘Om’.

These brief descriptions do not do complete justice to the ancient yogic practise.
