India is the land of Yoga and is home to many yoga schools. What makes GSY different from other schools of Yoga?
Yoga is a very ancient science that is a part of the very fabric of Indian society. For centuries these ancient techniques of Yoga have been taught by various expert masters for the benefit of the masses. And in spite of such mass preaching, what makes traditional sciences like Yoga so effective and free from distortions and concoctions is the integrity of the spiritual tradition. The Govardhan School of Yoga is also a part of an ancient traditional lineage and presents the pristine teachings of Yoga based on ancient scriptures like Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam. The holistic approach of these scriptures is evident in GSY, where yoga is seen not just on the mat but also off the mat!.
What do you mean by Yoga off-the-mat?
The ancient books of Yoga explain how our performance of yoga is not just the few hours we spend on the mat, but more so with how we conduct ourselves in the rest of the time. As human beings we have needs at various levels, namely – physical, emotional, mental, intellectual and spiritual. The GSY is located in the| ashram setting of Govardhan Ecovillage(GEV). At GEV care is taken to ensure not only the well-being of the community living there, but also the bigger ecological community of the plants, animals, rivers, land and other natural elements. Having won many national and international awards in the past few years, GEV today is a leading example of how to live in harmony with the self, divine and nature. In such a pristine environment Yoga can be seen in every aspect of the village. So the students learning experiences are thus not restricted to just the class rooms, but the entire village itself. From the yoga of ecology to yoga of community, GEV offers varieties of learning spaces to learn yoga off-the-mat too.
What impact does it have on the students?
As part of our course we don't just teach the physical postures and breathing exercises but expose our students to wide range of topics including Indian Philosophy, Bhagavad Gita, Ayurveda, Anatomy, Basic Sanskrit, Self-awareness exercise and Music. And along with the coursework we also organize weekly outings like mountain hikes, ecovillage tours, activities in animal barns, visit to GEV's farmer welfare programs, voluntary service in local schools for free meal serving etc. These experiential activities help the student to internalize the teachings of Yoga and creates an inner transformation. Practically all of our students go back not just with a certificate in their hand, but with priceless inspiration in their heart.
Whats the secret of this transformation?
In one word, we call it SEVA or selfless service. The spirit of GSY is the sacred mood of Bhakti or devotional service. The Bhakti tradition teaches that how each and every one us, and each and everything around us is sacredly united with the Lord in Yoga. And by realizing this sacred Yoga, one learns to extend the spirit of service to Lord, towards each and every aspect of His creation. That is why every activity at GEV, be it the Yoga school, the ecological initiatives, the community welfare programs, the rural development programs, the rural education programs, the women empowerment activities or even the animal care standards – are all an expression of this mood of Bhakti unto Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha & Krishna! This holistic approach to Yoga is the secret of transformation.
