A Journey Through the Three Līlās
Caitanya-caritāmṛta is divided into three major sections—Ādi-līlā, Madhya-līlā, and Antya-līlā. Together, they present a comprehensive picture of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s identity, teachings, activities, relationships, and devotional emotions.
The course takes students through all three līlās, allowing them to gradually enter deeper into the life and teachings of Mahāprabhu.
Ādi-līlā — Understanding the Identity of Mahāprabhu
The Ādi-līlā establishes the theological foundation for understanding Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
Students explore the tattva of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, His divine identity, His principal associates, and the purpose of His appearance. The narrative then enters His childhood and youth, revealing His extraordinary activities and the development of His mission.
The Ādi-līlā follows Mahāprabhu’s life up to the age of twenty-four, when He accepts the renounced order of life, sannyāsa.
Through this study, students gain a foundational understanding of who Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is and why His appearance is so significant in the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition.
Madhya-līlā — The Mission and Teachings of Mahāprabhu
The Madhya-līlā takes students into the active mission of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu following His acceptance of sannyāsa.
Students explore His extensive travels and activities in Jagannātha Purī, South India, and Vṛndāvana, as well as His relationships with many of His intimate associates.
A particularly important aspect of the Madhya-līlā is the profound philosophical conversations between Mahāprabhu and great personalities such as:
- Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya
- Prakāśānanda Sarasvatī
- Rāmānanda Rāya
- Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī
- Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī
These conversations reveal the depth of Mahāprabhu’s teachings on devotional service, the goal of life, the nature of Kṛṣṇa, and the highest stages of bhakti.
The Madhya-līlā thus brings together Mahāprabhu’s travels, His mission, His teachings, and His relationships with great devotees and scholars.
Antya-līlā — The Heart of Mahāprabhu's Devotion
The Antya-līlā offers a deeply intimate glimpse into the later pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, particularly His dealings with His close devotees and His increasingly profound ecstatic emotions for Kṛṣṇa.
Students explore Mahāprabhu’s intimate exchanges with devotees in Jagannātha Purī and witness the extraordinary depth of His prema-bhakti.
The Antya-līlā also culminates in the profound devotional teachings expressed through Śikṣāṣṭakam, the eight verses attributed to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
These verses provide a concise yet deeply profound expression of the progressive journey of devotional consciousness—from sincere practice and humility to the highest expressions of loving devotion.
